Inconsistency in image location logic.

On my friends website the html expects to find some product images in, for example,

/img/p/1361-1397-small.jpg (this is the old way Prestashop stored images)

 

but others in subfolders, for instance,

img/p/1/3/9/7/1397-large.jpg (the new way of storing images).

 

All of her product images are stored in /img/p and none in subfolders. Some of the images are not showing up because their real location does not match where the html expects them to be. Does anyone know how, per product, Prestashop decides where to look for each image?

PS I know there is a Move Images function in Prestashop but I am scared to use it. There are soooo many images.
