Issue upgrading to 1.4.6.2

I just attempted to upgrade from 1.4.2 to 1.4.6.2 and after the upgrade only the header images and fotter sections are displayed.

 

no left column, center colunm there is not even the currency info.

 

I checked modules and positions all look OK.

 

any suggestions on where to look why this version is generating only a few parts of the theme?

 

I even went back to the default shipped theme, that was even worse. that just displayed the little logo image.
