PS 1.4: Dedicated server required?

Recommended Posts

Hi:

I contacted today an ISP asking if their professional hosting meets PS 1.4 system requirements

========================================

Me: I want to know if your Linux Professional Hosting meets PS 1.4 requirements

- PHP 5.2+

- Activate "allow_url_fopen"

- MySQL 5+, InnoDB preferably

Tech suport: Yes, but PS developers recommends a dedicated server with 2 GB RAM. So, you won't have an optimum performance

Me: At the beginning it'll be a small shop, if things go well we'll migrate to a VPS or dedicated server

========================================

Is that true or the guy was just trying to sell me something more expensive? I haven't seen that recommendation on this site

Thanks in advance,

I am using 1.4.4.1 on a shared server with SSL and have at least above 500 products, usps and ups shipping and paypal credit card payment integration. You do not need a dedicated server to get going. My host also provides unlimited space, traffic and ram along with pretty good free support, upgrades, etc and I pay less than $50/yr. I also transferred my site to them and they gave me credit for my remaining balance at my previous host. Competition in current economies is making this possible. So you can find better options out there if they are insisting on that.

Thanks for your advice! I'm sure that guy was trying to improve incomes. The problem is my client has several web sites hosted with them and prefer to keep all with the same ISP. I'll give a try because they offer 15 days for a free trial

I think that having a dedicated server is to much for a single shop. Of course it all depends on the traffic and the transactions you expect.

If you reach to a point where a dedicated server is necessary then it means that your shop is really selling a lot, which is a good thing :)

I would strongly suggest though that you get with a program that offers you a dedicated IP, especially if you plan on using a SSL Certificate.

We also offer a free of charge 2 week period. You are welcome to try.

  • 2 weeks later...

we use virtual private server, this gives us experience on how to setup/run like a dedicated. If things go as planned we will eventually move to dedicated server primarily because our hosting smtp server can hold (queue) customer emails for up to 30 minutes...argh....with vps one can modify key areas of the mysql/php/linux/etc (in our case) environmentals to improve overall performance.

Hi, no not undelivered, but queued because we are sharing the smtp server with untold thousands of others. (search godaddy vds slow emai). It showed up in testing and even though I threw a bloody fit about it...well let's just say that didn't help at all. We can't even install/use our own smtp server because the proper ports are blocked by gd. (:
