Caching Concept: How to use it correctly?

Hi guys,

 

it would be really cool if somebody could explain how to handle the topic "caching" during development.

 

Szenario:

Let's say I have a "Top-Sellers" module which is kind of SQL-heavy. I would like to cache it's display-content just until another product is sold and it's content needs to be updated.

 

Questions:

1) I guess that just by switching on the "BackOffice / Preferences / Performance - Enable Cache" settings this issue will NOT be handled automatically? Right? Or wrong?

2) What exactly does the "BackOffice / Preferences / Performance - Enable Cache" do?

3) How would you guys implement the above scenario? I have seen some custom caching going on in "blockcategories" and it would be nice if someone could explain the concept behind.
