Problems with switching languages (bug?)

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I have a weird problem with switching languages on my shop.

I have configured my shop to support 2 languages; Dutch and English. if a customer then does the following steps:

1. customer enters the site in Dutch: http://www.imaginethatthisismyshop.eu/nl/

2. customer browses through my shop

3. customer decides to change his language, so he clicks the USA flag in the top

4. the shop changes the language into English

5. customer keeps on browsing through the shop, everything is in English

6. however, when the customer clicks the main logo of my shop to go to the homepage, the site suddenly switches back to Dutch again!

the other way around: exactly the same happens! :

1. customer enters the site in English: http://www.imaginethatthisismyshop.eu/en/

2. customer browses through my shop

3. customer decides to change his language, so he clicks the Holland flag in the top

4. the shop changes the language into Dutch

5. customer keeps on browsing through the shop, everything is in Dutch

6. however, when the customer clicks the main logo of my shop to go to the homepage, the site suddenly switches back to English again!

so it seems that when you click the main logo the shop goes back to the original language the shop had when you entered the first time.

Also, this only occurs when I have enabled the friendly URLs. when I disable this functionality everything works as expected.

Does anyone else have this problem also?

Does anyone know how to fix it? did I do something wrong maybe?

Hi Danny,

Testing it here in the U.S., I'm not encountering the error you mentioned. The site auto-defaults to English when I visit, but if I switch the language, that language stays constant even if I click on the home button. Do you have any more information that could help me replicate this error?

Hi Mike,

Thanks a lot for your fast reply.

Did you do the steps in the exact same order? so firstly arriving in English, then clicking around, then switching to Dutch, clicking around a bit more and then finally hitting the home button?

Also I see now that I forgot to mention one other thing; it seems to occur mostly to customers who are logged in to the site. Could you perhaps test it with creating an account? Of course you/we can delete your account later again.

Hi Danny,

Here are the steps I just followed:

1. Arrived to the English section of the site.

2. Created a customer account.

3. While logged in and still in English, clicked around to view various items.

4. Switched to the Dutch section.

5. Clicked around to view various items in Dutch.

6. Clicked on the Home image, and was redirected to the Dutch version of the home page.

Are there any other steps I may be missing? I'm still not seeing this issue you're reporting, but would like to try to help you fix it if I am able to replicate it on my end.

Hi Mike,

very weird, because we still experience the same problem.

I've just cleared my browser cache, history and cookies, and I have tried it again. I still have the same issue.

I have made a video about it to show you what I exactly have been doing, perhaps you can see what is happening there:

the video was made while using firefox.

I've tested it myself on Mac OSX with Safari and Firefox, my colleague tested it on Windows with IE and also Firefox. Has the same problems.

Perhaps you couldn't load the video because I made it private, I've made it public now.

Yes, that's what I wrote also ;)

"I've tested it myself on Mac OSX with Safari and Firefox, my colleague tested it on Windows with IE and also Firefox. Has the same problems."

So, we're getting this error on every scenario we tested on.

The video is a 10MB file, I could mail it to you maybe?

Hi Danny,

I just watched the video, and this issue after further inspection appears to be occur in Firefox and Internet Explorer, but not Chrome (my default browser). This is likely due to browser cookies, and in this situation the best option would probably be to report this through The Forge, where our dev team can look into this for you.
