Calculating shipping estimates remotely, having some issues.

I've over the past few weeks (months to be honest) been trying to create a module for my self that would gather shipping estimates for me through the use of a WebService function. I saw the CanadaPost one that is shipped with PrestaShop does just this, and I tried making mine in it's shadow so to speak.

 

I'm not able to replicate it perfectly though, they reference the ID of the current carrier with $this->id_carrier, but this value is the same repeatedly for me (for all my 27 carrier alternatives). What might I be missing out on here/is there a variable I should be using to reference the correct carrier id?
