Displaying Product Brands on Homepage

Hi,

 

i would like to know the best approach to take to display a listing of product brands on the homepage, displaying an image for each brand. I know that there is the Manufacturer block, which i have implemented, however the display uses a <li> to display each item. can someone please point me in the direction to change this into each specific Manufacturer image. I have looked into the blockmanufacturer.tpl trying to read in each Manufacturer image, however they are not displaying. Perhaps there is a better approach i should be taking?
