allow ordering when out of stock??

Hi

I am trying to either show products out of stock if stock = zero or not to permit orders being placed if there is not stock.

 

In preferences this option is greyed out so I cannot change it to "no".

 

Allow ordering out-of-stock product: Yes No

Add to cart button is hidden when product is unavailable

 

Can anyone help

 

I am still running PS 1.3.2

Ok we seem to have cracked it by fidling with other settings relating to stock

 

However, it would be good to have an out of stock message is there a facility to do this?
