Bug? Change title/copy item - friendly URL stays

Recommended Posts

Mustn't this be a bug? Though not "fixed" since I started on 1.2.4 so I suppose not?

I have loads of books of the style XXX vol 1, XXX, vol 2 etc

Same author, same price etc, so I copy vol 1, change the title and upload a new cover; but then I have to change the friendly URL! Why?

Also, when I discover a mistype etc, and change the title, the friendly URL doesn't change!

For both of these, if the friendly URL was not in most cases to represent the title, why have it automatically put there when making a new product?

If it usually is supposed to be the title, minus some awkward characters, why not change it per default and let those who want it not to change change it back!

This is reallly driving me crazy, I've spent 10 or so hours going through my stock trying to find all these errors and I'm only half through for the books yet, so I reckon maybe 20 more hours of work, plus the ones I miss... GRRRRRRRRRR!

(And of course the ones I do miss is going to end up like "awwww, I thought I ordered the brown set, because the URL said so! Please pay for the return of this yellow crap and send me a new one!")

And yes, this HAS happened.

Yes, this is expected behaviour. A friendly URL is supposed to be a permanent link to a product that doesn't change. Even when you change the product name, the original friendly URL remains so that all existing links to the product continue to work. It is possible to change the friendly URL, but that means if someone uses the original link, PrestaShop will need to redirect to the new link, which slows down the page load.

If changing the friendly URL when you change the product name is important to you, then I think you will have to get into the habit of clicking the "Click here to improve product's rank in search engines (SEO)" link, then clicking the "Generate" friendly URL from from product's name button.
