Problems with custom sorting of products in category

The products within a category are supposed to have little black up and down arrowheads in the 'Position' column.

In my shop there aren’t any arrows, but numbers instead, and no way to edit the numbers.

I have a different installation where I have the arrows, but in my latest shop I can’t get the arrows.

Any idea how to edit the position when the arrows are not available? Or how to get the arrows back?

Hard to tell, I suggest creating a backup of the admin folder, and trying to copy the admin files from a fresh copy (of the same PS version).
