Considering Prestashop, wondering about customization persistence

Recommended Posts

I'm evaluating Prestashop vs. other options for a revamped ecommerce site and would appreciate some information.

With any CMS/framework/shopping cart software, the most important consideration for me is how easy it is to customize, and upgrade without wiping out those customizations. I deployed one Virtuemart site and was not happy with what I had to go through in order to change anything - hacking PHP files that would get obliterated at upgrade time. I'm wondering if Presta will be a similar experience.

For instance, I do not want to ask the customer for his date of birth at order time. I have read that one must edit AuthController.php, Customer.php, and AdminCustomers.php (plus the template) to change which fields appear here. Editing those files would be okay, but what about upgrades? Will the next version of Presta wipe out my changes? If so by default, what can I do to avoid this and still keep my shop secure?

Hi,

I am an eCommerce website developer and I have to say prestashop is the by far the best shopping cart software I have tried. I have built websites using oscommerce, zencart, magento and cubecart and prestashop is by far the most professional and user friendly. In terms of updating the website after making changes to core files well i think the best thing to do would keep a not of which files you have changed and delete these from the upgrades so you don't overwrite any custom work. I am not aware of an easy solution to this and I think you will find the same thing with all other shopping carts.

Please contact me if you have any questions or need any help.

Best regards,

Tim
