How can I define a different Home page? Using a category or New Products?

Hi,

I've scoured the forum and am surprised that no one else seems to be talking about this. I'm trying to define the home page so that it displays as a list of products (like a default category or new products), but can't figure it out. Anybody acheived this?

I'm not interested in the Homepage Text editor, so simply deleted it in modules, but any changes I make to the index.tpl don't seem to make a difference - I still just get a blank page. How can I make a Home page something other than the "Homepage"??

This seems like it should be an easy thing to do, and yet....please help?!
