Do I need to add a return URL or does Prestashop do that automatically and, if not, what is the Return URL?

Yes, the paypal module will take care of that automatically.
You don't have to worry about this.

Orders using paypal on my site goto payment error status.

I have turned on auto return but I don't know what URL to use for return so I used the site root.

There is also a setting at your Paypal account. if you set that, it will automatically return to that URL.

Usually the module return url should override the one you set at your Paypal account.

Yes the auto return setting. That does not solve the problem.
