Combinations with other products instead of attributes

I'm setting up a shop for selling longboards. You can either buy a longboard complete or all parts separate.

I have created categories for wheels, trucks, decks etc. Then I have created one category called completes.

In completes I'm creating products for each deck and the idea is to have a standard setup and then allow my customers to customize that setup. I managed to do this by using Attributes and Groups. But it feels a little like duplicated efforts to create attributes for all products that I already have in my store under the other categories (wheels, trucks, decks etc). Is it possible to set this up in some other way to allow these combinations?

I have researched this issue for a while and I finally found some help from D4rKr0W in the prestashop irc chat room.

You set up combinations per products and they can't be linked together in terms of stock. So if I want this feature I better write a module for it. I'll think about it.
