I don't understand Taxes! What am I charging...

Recommended Posts

My client purchased the inventory that she is going to be selling and payed taxes. She has no physical store for this online shop, but has another business.

We're based in Florida, USA. What exact settings should I apply? Do I need to go and apply a tax to each and every 100+ products listed? Or do I just enable tax? It says 0.00 tax incl when I get to check out an item, I'm so confused, please be very specific and I greatly appreciate any help! It's getting urgent and after reading around here the posts seem so outdated or irrelevant to my questions.

Do I even need to charge tax? We have no physical location, or do I only charge tax to people that buy from Florida? Aghh! :/

Hi,

I'm pretty new to using presta as well but it seems your questions concerns more of a regular tax rules for your state than presta. You need to contact your State Comptroller's Office to determine how much exactly you need to charge. Even if you don't have physical location chances are you need to charge (and pay) taxes. May be only state.. may be federal also (not sure how FL works). They will tell you exactly how much...

I'm assuming you already filed for all applicable licenses/permits as well.

Once you know the rate, you'll set it up in Presta (taxes, tax rules).

What kind of permits do you need to sell online? I figured it was pretty unregulated, my client buys products via a deal with a producer and than sells them online, via the shop I'm making. How secure is prestashop really? I've seen oscommerce sites hacked before.

So I have to go back and drop down each item and set it for 7% tax? 6% FL and 1% county, this would apply to anybody buying anywhere?

Online selling is very regulated, just like any other business. And you do need permits/licenses. The best thing is again to contact FL State Comptroller's Office. Can also try your local SBA, googling... You/they would need to get business location (could be home), register the business (dba, partnership, LLC, corporation), obtain tax ID, permits, etc. Type of products sold would make a difference as well.

Hope that helps,

E.

Well, there is no Florida state comptroller anymore and hasn't been since 2003... and the information on taxes for selling online is barren. I am searching, I get almost nothing. Also, she has a business license and a sellers permit which pretty much covers that.. so

my only real question is, I charge EVERYBODY the 7%? And will paypal mess this up? Is presta still doing that non-total taxing for USA?

*edit* Thank you for your reply!
