internet explorer cannot find home page

hello all

I changed the title of my home page in BO>PREFERENCES>SEO & URLS. this then changed the friendly url description from "index" to nothing.

I am unable to add a word in the friendly URL box as it tells me " Url rewrite field must be filled at least in default or english language"

If you search for my shop in google chrome it seems to be okay but in internet explorer it is unable to find and gives message "We're sorry, but the Web address you entered is no longer available".

it is looking for www.homesteadandgarden.co.uk/index

How do I solve this please?
