Help: Local Server - Not able to view Front end of site, redirects

I install the latest prestashop release on a XAMPP server on my local machine. I went through the entire process, but after completing the steps I am able to access the backend, but the front end redirects me to the local server's splash page.

I am running the server on my Mac OS 10.6.7. I was having permission issues during installation, but figured out the problems and completed the installation.

I don't know what the problem is, but I changed some code in the server's index.php file to force an unfound redirect to my new presta folder instead of the default ("xampp"), and then I tried to access the file in my Safari browser and got this error message...

"Too many redirects occurred trying to open “http://localhost/new_fab_upgrade/”. This might occur if you open a page that is redirected to open another page which then is redirected to open the original page."

I thought that maybe it might have something to do with the .htaccess file incorrectly redirecting the url. But when I went to find the .htaccess file it wasn't there, which is strange because in the admin I generated it based on a system recommendation and was given a success message. So why the file didn't actually create? I don't know. What also strange is that I *was* able to generate the robot.txt file, I know the generation feature works. But for some reason the .htaccess file will not get created.

After looking at the presta index file, I don't understand why it's redirecting or what is causing it. I troubleshooted the problem but can't figure it out. Could someone give me some help with this. This is a fresh install, so Im out of ideas...
