1-click isnt best for major updates. Is good for updates lik 1.7.8.9 -> 1.7.8.11, not for 1.7 - > 8.1. If i were you i would install clean 8.1.6, install modules, theme and migrate the data base.

On 1.7.6.8 your theme or some of the modules could not work well on version 8.1

Allow me to say this is quite strange also because the 1-Click Upgrade module gives the possibility also to proceed on through a Major Release.

Anyway, apart what I have explained, how should we proceed on?

No saying it cant be done. But upgrading major releases sometimes gives you pain related to theme, modules from old version.

I would use 1-click direct upgrade module. But it isnt free, good if your plan more then one upgrade, more stores.
