$5 shipping for no obvious reason

This error was reported some time ago but I never saw a resolution to it.

As a product is added to cart, the shipping cost defaults to $5 and I see no place in admin where it was set...

??

Can someone help me?

Well, I fixed my problem by going to the shipping module and entering 1 lb in "Free shipping starts at" (instead of the default "0' that was there ). Go figure.

Go to your shipping and depending if you selected weights or order amount, See where your shipping currier has the amount $5 in it and note the weight, go back to your item page and edit, play around with the weight amount and ballance the 2 things up. Hope that makes sense. I just had a similar problem, everything people ordered levied a shipping cost of £8.50. Sorted now though. Good luck.

I'm having the same problem, shipping cost defaults to same amount whenever an item is added into the cart regardless to the shipping zone.
And found that, the shipping cost defaults is similar to shipping cost set for 0.25kg weight. This problem is solved when setting the "Free shipping starts at 0.25kg".
However, the shopping cost will show "free" when the total weight is above 0.25kg.

Please advise how to overcome this problem.

Mine problem solved after changing the default of shipping country.
