[SOLVED] Can't log into BO, even made new MD5 hash pword

I'm not sure what happened, but I am unable to log into the back office - I have tried the following:
1- email password to me (nothing arrived)
2- made new password, input the MD5 hash into the database in the row for my Admin user account
3- made new admin account with all fields filled in, different email addy, different password (MD5 hash)

This is what happens:

There is 1 error

Employee does not exist or password is incorrect.

This occurs for both the existing Admin account and the new account. Clearly, both 'employees' DO exist.

Short of starting all over, what can I do?
