Upgrading prestashop from 1.6.x

Hello,

I have one shop running on very old prestashop version: 1.6.1.19.

What is the best approach (upgrade path) to migrate it to 8.x?

Do I have to upgrade 1.6.x to 1.7.x, then 1.7.x to 8.x? Or it's possible to upgrade 1.6 directly into the newest one?
PS. I don't care about plugins, because every plugin supports the newest version.

you will need to step migrations through major releases.  1.6 --> higher version of 1.6, then  aim at 1.7.7.6.  

I create a file/db backup after each successful jump so I can restore  when jump failed and need to do another version

I think premature for solo admin to upgrade to early non stable release of ps8
