Sending data to ApGenCode widget in Ap Page Builder module

So here's the thing, I'm working on a website that uses Ap Page Builder module for the homepage. I need to generate HTML code in a specific column of a certain group. This HTML code will display data dynamically retrieved directly from the database using Smarty. I'm using ApGenCode widget which generates a .tpl file.

The problem is that I can't find a way to send my data to this .tpl file. I've tried looking for which controller is used to display it, and I also saw that you can add {insert_php file='path/to/file.php'} but that gives me a 500 error.

I'm really stuck here, does anyone have a solution or a hint to offer?
