[Solved] State Tax on 1.4.0.17

Recommended Posts

I have read every post and article I can find and still can't get this right.

I just finished viewing the tutorials at http://www.prestatraining.com/set-up-taxes-in-prestashop-v1-4/. I was hoping this would help, but it seems that this is for a Product Tax as he has the tax rule for each product set to a tax rule. I want a State tax to apply to every product. From what I've read, I should set the tax rule for each product to "NoTax". But if I do this I am not getting any tax added for California addresses.

This is what I have done:
1. Shipping >> Zones ... has both US & International
2. Shipping >> Countries ... USA (US) & Canada (International) are enabled. All others disabled
3. Shipping >> States ... Somethings I have read said: " in the Tax Behavior field, you indicate Product tax — ... or... State tax." However there is NO field for this. So where do I set it?
4. Payment >> Taxes ... At the bottom I set Taxes to Enabled, Display in Cart: Yes, Based on Delivery Address. I disabled all states, but California.
In the Product Catalog I set all to "no Tax" for the tax rule. according to: http://www.prestashop.com/wiki/Taxes/

But I get no tax for California. What am I doing wrong? It seems that I am missing the step for setting the Tax Behavior to be set to State Tax, but where do I do this?

Thank you!

I think you need use the tax rules functionality.

1. Set up the tax rule at
- Payments tab
- Tax rules sub tab

There are existing two tax rules "CA standard rate 10%" and "CA Reduced Rate 5%" already by default.

2. Apply the rule you created to all products

Yes, after more reading, I came to the same conclusion, So it seems that while there was the ability to use a Product Tax and a State Tax in other versions, they did away with that ability in this version. So, now the steps to get it working are opposite of the previous version as far as that last step - On a product, instead of selecting the "No Tax" rule we must chooses a rule, but are limited to only one rule.

That will cut out a lot of potential Prestashop users.

Does anyone know if 1.4.1.0 has the same limitations?

Thank You!

Well, it works for this particular client, because we don't have any product taxes and are only taxed in one state. So the steps for me are all the same, except for that last step. So, no problem.

However, I have a new client who will more than likely need to charge state tax, at different rates, in more than one state, so I need to know if Prestashop will work for that and how I would set that up. Oh, okay, I think I get it. It looks like I could set up a "MyCustom" tax rule where I could choose several states, each with a different rate. Is that correct?

Lastly, I know that some of the posters had situations where they had to charge an additional tax on specific products and also a state tax rate. I don't see how that would work. Is it possible?

Thank You!

Sorry. I'll explain better. I know I will run across this at some point if I continue to use Prestashop, and I know others have asked similar questions. So, I'll try to explain more fully.

I was trying to figure out how someone would be able to have both a product tax and a state tax applied to an item, and also account for the possibility that a store might need to apply state taxes to more than one state.

But, I think I see now, that that could be done with custom rules where the product tax and state tax are added together for states that you need to also collect state tax from. An entry would be made in Payment >> Taxes for the product tax, then additional entries for the combined product and state tax for each state required. Then a new tax rule would be created in Payment >> Tax Rules and the product tax alone applied to all states that don't require state tax, and the new combined product/state taxes applied to the states that do require state tax. So what I didn't understand before is that a Tax Rule can be quite complex if you need it to be.

Then, after you've made the Tax Rule, go to each product that requires this product tax and apply this new custom rule.

I'm not sure if I explained that any better or not. LOL! It was really hard for me to wrap my head around, and even though I'm not sure if I explained it well, I thin I understand it now.

It could make for a LOT of taxes and rules, depending on your situation, but it looks like that would be the way to do it and it really is quite flexible.

Do you think I am I on the right track?

Thanks!
