Related product sort order not working same as product sort order?

I need advice on how to set up an sort order for the related products. For example, if I have a category of vacuum cleaners (let's say I have about 10 of them) and I click on reorder and move them up and down the way I want to be shown on the site reorder works properly. So, for Vacuum Cleaners A, G, F, E, D, B, C, I can get A, B, C, D, E, F, G to be displayed on the website. But the problem arises when I want to sort related products. Let's say a hose, a filter, a bag, a cable, etc... I also do reorder the way I want them to be displayed, but when I click save & refresh the sorting is not updated, the order remains the same. Does something need to be adjusted somewhere in the settings, so that they can be shown from my reorder and not from oldest to the newest added?
