pandastrike
Hi all, We've got a Prestashop 1.6.11 store here:https://giantpygmy.net/shop/index.php? And ultimately want to move it to here:https://gp-hq.net/system/index.html At the same time we'd like to update it to 1.7+ (latest version). I'm a little out of touch with all the latest developments with Prestashop, but from what I understand the database structure and theming changed from 1.6 to 1.7. When I worked on the original shop (which operates around different retailers):https://giantpygmy.net/shop/index.php?id_category=47&controller=category I stripped out a lot of what I felt were superfluous features as we wanted a reasonably stripped down and simple store to run. Ideally, we'd like to create an almost exact copy of the 1.6.11 store but operate the latest Prestashop and we'd like to keep the old version running while the new build happens on the other domain (gp-hq.net). 1) Does anyone have any ideas about the best way to go about doing this? 2) Do the migrate modules really work or can they create a mess? 3) Should one install a fresh 1.7+ copy on the new domain then transfer, or transfer 1.6.11 then update to 1.7. 4) Finally, we might look to pay a theme developer to create a simple theme to largely replicate the old store (though have it more responsive / mobile friendly). Does anyone have any thoughts about the best way to get a reputable developer on these forums? Many thanks for any and all help. Andy.
Wallgrind.nl
Hello You should definitely install the latest PrestaShop 1.7 on gp-hq.net and import all data from your 1.6 store. Upgrading from 1.6 to 1.7 is going to give you a big headache Trust me

I'd definitely recommend using export/import of data making a backup first of course. you can use for example prestashop manager with flexible wizards and do it using its bridge connection with Get/Post operations (it creates local database and you can revert the unwanted changes) https://www.prestashopmanager.com/useful-articles/how-to/how-to-transfer-prestashop-database-to-another-store/
webprog
And prestashop 1.8 soon. Think about it.
pandastrike
Many thanks to all for the info. I'm thinking about using one of the paid-for migration modules (migration pro / 1-click etc ...). @webprog do you think it's worth hanging on and migrating direct to 1.8 (we don't have to rush as all is working well on the existing store) We've had some dev interest and may choose a developer if required. Having had a look at migration pro I was considering doing the migration myself and then paying for some theme / theme tweaking to work around some of the minor oddities we have and to basically get a more responsive version of what we have with hopefully a few extra niceties. Now I'm wondering if it's worth waiting for 1.8 -- is it quite close to release? Thanks again for all the input. Andy.

I think it will take half a year. 41 minutes ago, pandastrike said: Now I'm wondering if it's worth waiting for 1.8 -- is it quite close to release? We have RC1 in testing now. There will be differencies in PHP 8.0 support and some functionalities also in prestashop 8.x.
pandastrike
I think there's going to be possible PHP version bridging issues. In that to run a new PS 1.8 you'd need a PHP version that will break PS 1.6.1. Thanks for the info. Andy
