Is there a setting to change the number of characters displayed for product or do I have to edit the tpl file?

I'm using PS 1.7.8.3. I know the number of characters displayed can be changed editing the product.tpl file (which I have done), but I was wondering if there's a setting that I'm missing in the back office where this can be set.

If you use classic theme there isn't setting in back office, only way is edit tpl file.
