Performance

I have just installed 1.4.1 and I would like to set it up with optimal performance. So please be patient with me as I ask these questions:

On the Preference >> Performance page.

1. At the top is says Cache and is set to Yes - OK, I understand that.
2. However, at the bottom of the screen it says: "Use Caching" which is set to no and has options: File System and memcached - what is the best setting to use please?
3. Could someone explain what the cyphering options means please?
4. Now to CCC - it says that this will run quicker than CSS. But it also says that I need to specify a media server, and I don't understand why. The options are:

Smart cache for CSS
Smart cache for JavaScript
Minify HTML
Compress inline JavaScript in HTML
High risk HTML compression

Would someone be kind enough to give a brief description of these options please together with a recommendation; or point me at a user guide?

Lastly, will changing any of these options "break" the shop or any of its modules.

If someone could help out here I would be very grateful and it could be a useful resource to others who are as confused.
