tlang1
Hello, I was wondering if it is required to update prestashop each time a new version comes out, for security reasons. Or is it OK to stay with my current version, which works just fine for me. My shop is very small, and I only got a few products, but still rather not risk losing any data by stumbling through un unneeded update. If there ever is a need for an update, will there be a big bold message in my prestashop backoffice window maybe? Thanks!
musicmaster
Most shops only update occasionally or not at all. An important motive nowadays for upgrading is that hosting providers are updating the PHP version. Prestashop security problems that get publicity are rather rare (once in a few years). In such cases they are discussed on the forum and often tagged so that they stay on top. But you won't get information in your backoffice.

I am on 1.7.6.7 quite some time. Tried to upgrade but failed due to most modules I'm using can't be updated and I need them. The best way is to make a shop clone, backup. Change theme to classic and then update. Depends on hosting you are using, all can be reversed.
joseantgv
If you can, do it. But first in a cloned site and having a backup (and ensuring that the backup is backupable ;))
El Patron
No. Unless you have a compelling business reason to do so. Like new feature etc..leave it alone.

Sometimes the decision shouldn’t be based exclusively on business reasons, I’d say PHP compatibility is also a reason why you should update, especially when your hosting provider drops support for your current PHP version and your current Prestashop version is not fully compatible with the next PHP version. For me, core performance improvements that increase the site speed (considerably) is also a reason I should update. Depending on what you are looking for, I don’t think the answer is carved on stone. I disagree, PS is not wordpres... To run ecommerce one must control their environment including PHP level. We just won nice contact two days ago where client was attempting upgrade because their hosting dropping php7.2. We are moving them to a liquidweb vps running plesk where they have complete control of their php environment. Further based on our sane strategy we also won their upgrade project, we are long time PS US agency with 18 people, they will get a kick ass upgrade...we rock, I love saying that. total billables 8,300.00USD.... Upgrades are not for the 'weak', hire professionals who do things you didn't know you didn't know. happy ps'ing
