product.customizable variable to all the products on my site

Some module or other adds the {$ product.customizable} variable to all the products on my site like this:
1. I add a new product or save an existing one with the error without making changes it is no longer a customizable product in the database.
2. If I click on buy and it is placed in the cart it becomes customizable
So for all products, I have disabled all modules that use this variable, and intercepted one of them as a possible cause but the module support claims that it is not what the cause is.
