Enabling emails (to and from customers)

Hi all, 

A relative newbie here. Have duplicated a shop and all is working well other than emails.

I can't send from the back end and customers aren't able to send from front.

So no order confirmations from me, no communication at all from customers.

Status in bank end for emails looks right . Is there anything else I need to do? If it's module related, I'm a real beginner so will need simplified instructions on how to create one!

Any assistance gratefully received!
