Upgrade from 1.6.1.7 to latest 1.7.7.1

It can. But there is a considerable chance that you will run into errors.

So:

 - make a copy of the shop and upgrade that. When it succeeds you can upload it to replace the original.

 - uninstall and remove all non-Prestashop modules that aren't compatible with 1.7 (very likely all of them) before you start the upgrade

 - switch the shop back to the default theme and delete the template it is using now.

 - upgrade the shop with 1-click upgrade. You can speed the process up by disabling its backup options. That process is unreliable so you should rely on copies that you made yourself.

 - PS 1.7.7 runs with different PHP versions than 1.6.1. So switch to such a php version.

If this doesn't work there are more options. So come back and ask then.

I just to ask there a reason to upgrade to 1.7?

If you want to safely upgrade your online store, use an automated cart migration service provider such as ours.

Ensure the highest accuracy and the least human involvement. Only 3 simple steps to set up everything and no coding skills required.

What did you offer me?

Is it possible/reliable to have a dev-server with installed PS 1.7 and "somehow?" have the data transfered from the shop to the dev-server?

- or have a exact mirror on a dev-server and use 1-click to upgrade that dev.server?

Can the 1.6.1 run on PHP 7.3 and even more important - vil the 1-click upgrade support it?

My provider want to upgrade the server to PHP 7.4, but I can't find anything ensuring me that Prestashop is reliable with that?

1 - If you find it too difficult to copy the files and the database and to make the few changes needed to get it running you really need to hire someone.

2 - No, PS 1.6.1 needs PHP 5.6

3 - Indeed, You cannot yet run even the newest Prestashop on PHP 7.4. It may kind of work but you are bound to get some problems.

It was just to hear if there is another work-around to get the job done - thanx.

- you mean switch php version afterwards the 1-click-upgrade?

1 - The alternative - as Mara Drijbooms mentioned - is data migration. Then you create a fresh Prestashop installation of the newest version and you use some data migration service to copy the data from the old shop to the new one. After that you still need to make the new shop the active one.

2 - indeed

My provider just said that the dev-server has PHP 7.2.34 installed - will the upgrade then be possible? (the shop is running on php 5.6.6)

So - I have a website running 1.5.3.1 on php 5.6 - I understand that php 5.6 is deprecated and my host is warning that I should upgrade to later php.

I understand that upgrading to 1.7.x from 1.5.x is almost impossible so where do I go with this? What versions of PS are compatible with the latest versions of php.  My host currently offers versions 5.6, 7.2, 7.3, 7.4 and 8.

Any suggestions on how I should upgrade my site ......... or is it not worth the effort and "if it ain't broke don't fix it" - trouble is it is breaking - odd errors keep cropping up and I'm thinking I keep patching a sinking ship and it's time to build a new one!

Thanks in advance for any input/thoughts

What you could do is installing the second shop in a subdirectory of the first. So next to www.shop.com you would have a second shop at www.shop.com/dev

We can safely upgrade PrestaShop version 1.6 to 1.7 but sometimes it throws some errors. For that we have to follow some steps-

a) Make a backup of your shop and upgrade PrestaShop if it is working properly then replace this with original

b) Remove all modules which are not supported by the new version and templates before upgradation of PrestaShop

c) Upgrade the shop with 1-click upgrade

d) PrestaShop 1.7 supports other PHP version as compared to 1.6 version so we have to changed it

Hi Kamal, thanks for the response, I decided in the end to create a completely new site and then I used Migration Pro to copy across all data from existing site.  This worked very well actually from the point of view of transfer of data.  The problem is that PS gets less and less user-friendly by each version and things that I could handle quite comfortably with the tools and BO interface in 1.5.3.1, I am struggling to achieve in 1.7.7.2! The omission of the WYSIWYG editor in "Positions" is a major loss and made things so simple to help customise your site this textual block/hook/transplant system is a total nightmare!

If I was being synical, I'd say that PS is trying to make it more complicated so that users must go to developers to sort out problems, rather than simplifying it to make it easier for DIY.  I've been operating PS sites for 7-8 years now but this latest is the worst yet.
