$base_dir or $base_dir_ssl

Hi, just wondering what the difference between the {$base_dir} and {$base_dir_ssl} functions are? Obviously I can understand the basics that one is SSL enforced and one not, but does the SSL one just display the normal one in the case of SSL not being used?

Reason I ask is that we are building a theme which doesn't enforce a full SSL connection as it displays secure and non secure items. I use htaccess to enforce the entire site to use SSL which works perfect with the default prestashop theme, but doesn't for the above reason with our theme. Any help appreciated.
