Allow purchases without creating an account

I read a while ago that there was a way around this.
I have a 67% drop out at the customer account creation stage which is obviously hurting my sales.
Seems potential buyers dont want to create an account.

I know the newer version of PS has a "guest checkout" but i tried upgrading and my site went haywire so restored back to my 1.3 version.

I have searched how to alter the code to allow buyers not to register for an account but i cannot seem to find any info on it again.
Can someone point me in the right direction or show me how to do this?
