Allow ordering of out-of-stock products - can't prohibit (V1.7.6.1 )

I'm on V1.7.6.1  - the problem I have is I keep getting customers buying products that I have no stock.

Under Product setting  "Allow ordering of out-of-stock products" is set to NO .

A customer is clearly still able to oder...I then see an order with a status of Backordere ; in my Back office?

Is there something else I should be doing?

If not, his there a hack where I can actually stop a customer buying products where the quantity is 0?

Hi,

Allow ordering out-of-stock products is the default setting. However, you can override that in every Product itself. So go to one of your products that have been ordered even its out of stock and check the quantities pages. Availability Preferences overrides the default settings and make sure "Use default" is selected.

no its not the same issue. The issue described in your link is that if something gets ordered that is out of stock, the order is  not set to Backorder. Way different issue.
