add to cart behaviour / customer login issues

Wondering if anyone might be able to help...

My client's site is running an old modified PrestaShop 1.5.4.1 website on php 5.2 (I know... Advised numerous times to update without uptake).
We previously had a number of custom reports and a few features developed which complicates things and is the reason we have not updated the site - increasing Prestashop or PHP version will break some of the reports and features. Updating is now on the cards to do at some stage in the future which is excellent but the most pressing thing is an issue that has just started 2 days ago with the add to cart behaviour which has stopped the site from functioning properly.

When a customer is not logged in to the my account section:

• In Firefox, the javascript add to cart pop-up appears, but the cart in the header does not get updated - nothing shows in the cart.
• In Chrome, the add to cart appears to work as expected except after logging in

When a customer is logged in to the my account section:

• In Firefox, the javascript add to cart pop-up appears, but the cart in the header does not get updated - nothing shows in the cart.
• In Chrome, the javascript add to cart pop-up appears, but the cart in the header does not get updated - nothing shows in the cart. Any existing items in the cart from before the login show again in the my account section... (not sure if relevant but that is under https, the product pages of the site are under http (how 1.5.X works)
• In both browser in the my account section the padlock in the website header is open and it says "hi nick" (as if logged in), but changing to the other pages (which are http) the padlock in the website header is closed and there is no username (as if not logged in)

I have temporarily turned off Geolocation so you can test:

Attached is the product-list.tpl file mentioned in the errors above... also the shopping-cart.tpl and the header.tpl. Not sure if these are relevant.

There is also an update available to the PayPal module. Also not sure if that is relevant to this issue... I don't know if that could create add to cart issue.

We have not made any changes to the site. My gut feel is that its a security or some other setting on the server. We have chatted to the web host but they can''t identfy the issue and said they have not done any server changes.

Any ideas on what we can do as a quick fix?
