How to Remove Sidebars and Otherwise change template

Hi I would like to remove most of the left and right sidebars but I can't seem to figure out how to do this. I searched the forum and someone mentioned modifying the TPL files but I have no idea what this means. I found the TPL files but nothing is clearer. Do I delete the TPL files so they don't show up? What do I need to modify that's "referencing" the TPL files (causing them to show up) and where is it?

if you uninstall the modules from the left and right side bars, then the boxes that they create won't show.... Not really sure what you're trying to achieve.

Go to Back Office click on Module>>Positions and look for Right column blocks and Left column blocks sections and delete whatever you do not want in those areas.

You can leave the "My Account block v1.2" since is hiden and only apears when person logs in

Thank you; that worked. Is there a specific stylesheet that controls the gray headers in the sidebars (and the featured products section)? Because the global.css in the themes folder doesn't seem to reference them.

I want to replace the gray gradient header with a gradient of another color. Though I've made the change to the image and overwritten the old one, I'm still seeing the gray gradient header. (I really wish the documentation on customization was much better)

If you did change the color of the image, make sure you hit + in your browser so it updates the image instead of using the cached one.

I figured out what the problem was. When I view the image address on the page it is showing as "block_header.png" but the template is actually using the gif file. (i had to delete both files to make sure that was the case)
