Installation process skipped step 2!! jumped straight from step 1 to step 3: why?

Hi all,
I was having problems with the installation (Allow external urls and register_globals = Off were red, even though I changed it in the php.ini file I created… )
So I uploaded an .htaccess file, but then instead of the installation it displayed an information page... so I deleted the .htaccess file and reloaded the installation process, and this time it skipped step 2 and went straight from step 1 to 3.

Any idea why?

Also, how important is the having register_globals = Off in red? Can I still go on with the installation?
