Display of variation pictures in product page not working like Prestashop 1.6

I just discovered the way Prestashop 1.7 handles variation pictures
so that the pictures related to default variation are always displayed when landing on a product page.

This is a huge step backwards compared to Prestashop 1.6 where the link of the main product showed all the pictures
and changing was only happening when actually changing the variation (with the useful "display all pictures" link to show all pictures "no matter what").

I wonder if somebody know a module or a modification to replace the 1.6 behavior without editing the core.
