inventory input of opening stock quantities v available stock quantities

Hi

I'm looking to see if in 1.7 there is a way  when creating a product to input opening stock quantities in each product and then to see the closing stock quantities after a period of time in statistics or if someone can recommend a good stock system module/inventory module so I can see my stock turnover /performance
